Treaty No. 6 Recognition Day is a celebration and acknowledgement of the deep-rooted connections between amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton) and Treaty No. 6 First Nations. This day honours the invaluable contributions of First Nations to the city’s past and present while reaffirming Edmonton’s commitment to reconciliation.
This past August, knowledge keepers, Elders, and community members came together to share wisdom and practices around Indigenous health and wellness. This event celebrated traditional healing, cultural teachings, and the strength of community connections, offering a space for learning, reflection, and unity.
The 2024 Treaty 1- 11 gathering celebrated shared history, culture, and traditions. This event brought together communities to honour treaty relationships, strengthen connections, and highlight the rich heritage of the participating nations. The gathering featured ceremonies, teachings, and discussions that emphasized unity, solidarity, and understanding among Indigenous communities.
On July 25, 2022, in Maskwacis, Alberta, Pope Francis acknowledged and issued a formal apology on behalf of the Catholic Church’s role in the residential school system. Many Indigenous leaders and community members embraced the apology as a “first step to a path forward” towards justice and healing.
